UPDATED - Class of 2020 Graduation

posted Jun 25, 2020, 7:32 AM by SWR5 Web Sites   [ updated Jul 10, 2020, 6:54 AM ]

The class of 2020 graduation ceremony will take place on Thursday, July 9, at 7:00pm. With the increase of Covid-19 cases locally, graduation will look different than in previous years in order to be as safe as possible and to follow the guidelines of the health department. Please understand that this is not how the district wants to do graduation, but how we must do it in our current situation.

Graduates, please email Mr. Roller at ericroller@swr5.net if you DO NOT plan on attending so that we can better prepare. Also, if you have a family member that needs handicapped seating, please let Mr. Roller know that via email.

The guidelines for graduation are:
  • Graduation will take place in the HS Parking Lot at 7:00pm on Thursday, July 9.
  • Each graduate will be allowed 10 family members. There will be no sharing of that number.
  • PLEASE car pool as much as possible, including graduates riding with their family. This will help conserve parking and allow people to have a better view of the ceremony from setting up lawn chairs around their vehicles.
  • Graduates will have socially distanced seating.
  • Please practice social distancing as much as possible.
  • School policy still applies on hair, piercings, clothes, etc.
  • Graduation will be broadcast live with a link on the school website, www.swr5.net. The link will appear at least 15 minutes prior to graduation starting.
  • Graduates will throw their hats from their socially distanced seat and will be dismissed with their families.
  • Flowers will be provided as in the past, but graduates will hand them to their family members after leaving, not during the ceremony.
  • There will be no congregating in the school or on school grounds.
We know these guidelines aren't what our graduates want or what the district wants. We are sorry. Unfortunately, these are the guidelines we must follow.

Additionally, graduates will be able to access their school issued email accounts until after graduation so they can receive emails from Mr. Roller and/or others.

As the world has shown us, things can change over the next few days. Please be flexible, patient, understanding and kind. It is deeply appreciated.

Drop Off Breakfast and Lunch Plans

posted Mar 23, 2020, 5:03 PM by SWR5 Web Sites   [ updated Jul 1, 2020, 8:43 AM ]

RoboCall sent March 23, 2020.

This is Tosha Tilford, Superintendent of the Southwest Schools. This call is to let
you know that tomorrow, Tuesday, March 24th the district will start dropping-off
breakfast and lunch sacks through the bus routes.

Since the safety of everyone is extremely important, the district is using a minimal
contact protocol. The bus will pull-up to the regular morning pick-up point, and the
driver will honk the bus horn.

If you want the food sacks for your children, please signal to the bus by waving from
the porch, then return to your house. The bus helper will bring the food sacks to the
porch and leave them. At this point, it is fine for you to get the food. If you have a
dog running loose, please get the animal put away or bus will not be stopping.

If the morning pick-up for your child is down a lane from the house, the bus will be
stopping at the normal place. You will need to have someone waiting at that stop for
the food to be dropped-off.

These procedures will be used each day. If you miss a day, the bus will not stop
again unless you call the Central Office 417-826-5410 to get put back on the route.

The estimated time for the food delivery is approximately one hour 30 minutes later
than the normal morning pick-up time.

The other locations for food distribution are at the People’s Bank of Seligman and
the People’s Bank of Washburn. The distribution time at these locations is from
8:40 am to 10:00 am.

Food will be distributed on regularly scheduled school days and will keep running as
long as needed to help during these troubled times. Updates will be provided
through the district webpage, emails, robocalls, and Facebook pages.

Everyone, please remember that health and safety is most important.

Thank you,

Tosha Tilford

Wellness Break Announced

posted Mar 16, 2020, 10:16 AM by SWR5 Web Sites   [ updated Jul 1, 2020, 8:42 AM ]

The Southwest R-5 School District in conjunction with other area school districts and the Barry County Health Department is going on a Wellness Break as of Tuesday, March 17th through Friday, April 3.

All extracurricular and co-curricular events, practices, and meetings will be suspended or postponed. This includes the band concert scheduled for tonight, March 16th. It will be rescheduled for a later date in the spring.

In addition, Parent.Teacher Conferences will be completed via telephone, FaceTime, or emails. There will be no Parent. Teacher Conference drop-in time on Thursday afternoon from 1:00pm. This time will not be made-up so please be prepared to use a different type of communication with the teachers.

The district is evaluating food service options based on health department guidance. There is a possible pick-up and go option which the district may implement so that students will have meals available during the wellness break.

All office staff including principals, secretaries, and counselors will report during the Wellness Break. Custodians, bus drivers, and cooks will report for deep cleaning as well as other duties. Teachers will also report according to the schedule provided by the superintendent.

Some of the hours missed for the Wellness Break will need to be made-up so the 2019-2020 District Attendance Calendar will be modified. The new calendar will be communicated once the Wellness Break is over and all attendance days are calculated.

The district is doing everything it can to keep the students, staff members, and community safe during this time of concern.
