Washington Leadership Conference


The Southwest FFA Chapter had four members and one advisor attend WLC in Washington D.C. June 7 –June 15 . Washington Leadership Conference, or WLC, is a weeklong leadership training that focuses on diversity, community, and communication. Michael Banks, Morgan Mitchell, JR Henry, Sarah Catron, and Mrs. Brown earned their way to WLC by fundraising and getting sponsorships from local businesses.


On their way to Washington D.C. they visited Thomas Jefferson’s Homestead in Monticello, Virginia. After visiting Monticello, they spent the night in Virginia Beach before traveling into Washington D.C. While in D.C. the group visited many historical monuments. Some of these included: the Capitol, the White House, Lincoln Memorial, and the Vietnam Memorial. “Seeing the Changing of the Guards and all of the fallen heroes was my favorite part of WLC,” Morgan said. While they were visiting the Capitol, it was under construction which only happens once every sixty years.


The students also attended leadership classes. A couple of the classes they attended were about diversity, finding their personal skills, and being an advocate for agriculture. The attendees also got to experience a poverty dinner, they got to experience what it would be like to live first class, middle class, and lower class. Junior JR Henry said, “This opened my eyes to see what some kids and adults go through on a daily basis.”


Students also took educational tours. Some of these included Jefferson’s Homestead, Washington’s Homestead, Arlington National Cemetery, and the World War II. Visiting the homesteads taught students how people grew their food and also taught them how people farmed in history. Visiting Arlington National Cemetery is also educational, as they learned about America’s history and get to see fallen soldiers who defended our country.


This trip to WLC was a lifetime experience for students and they also got to grow as an FFA Member. Advisor Mrs. Brown said “My favorite part was seeing not only my FFA students learn and grow as an individual from their experiences, but others as well.” The group was asked if they would recommend this to other FFA members. All of the students said that they would recommend this to other FFA members. “I would most definitely recommend this to every FFA member because it’s more than a once in a lifetime experience, you get to meet new people and learn new things to bring back to your chapter” stated junior Sarah Catron.


 

Grants

The Southwest FFA Chapter would like to thank several businesses and organizations for their contributions. We would like to thank the Cassville Soil and Water Conservation for their $500 donation, and the Farm Bureau for their donation of $100. The local FFA would also like to thank Walmart for the seed donations, and the food donated for various activities including the WLC trip.

FCS Grant

The Southwest FFA received a grant for $500 through FCS financial to better improve the community. The money will go toward a service project to help make improvements on the Seligman First Baptist Church. The FFA members will begin to beautify the outside of the church, then help make improvements to the interior of the church. The students who applied and received the grant in the Southwest AG Leadership class were Macky McNabb and Hailey Benninger.
