State Track Roundup

Six Southwest athletes participated in the Class 2 State Track meet at Jefferson Coty Friday and Saturday. On Friday in the 400-meter dash Sophomore Brylee Wilson and Senior Trevor Sneed ran in the preliminaries, but failed to qualify for the finals. Sophomore John Scannell placed 4th in his hurdles heat and 8th overall and qualified for Saturday's final. On Saturday. the 4x800 relay team of Trevor, Chrstian Long, Xander Deshields, and Travis Sickles ran an 8:49.41 and placed 12th in the state, 1.07 seconds behind SWCL foe Spokane for 11th. And in the 110 high hurdles, John finished 7th in the state in 15.76 seconds, a new PR and just .41 seconds off the school record. John was named All-State for his efforts. 

Six Qualify for State Track

Trevor Sneed, John Scannell, Brylee Wilson, Travis Sickles, Christian Long, and Xander Deshields qualified for the state meet at Saturday's sectional at Clinton. John won the 110-meter high hurdles, while Brylee was second in the 400 and Trevor 4th, also in the 400. Also, the 4x800 relay team of Trevor, Travis, Christian, and Xander recovered from dropping the baton and placed 4th with their best time of the year. Next: Prelims for John, Brylee and Trevor Friday and finals and the 4x800 relay Saturday at Jefferson City.

Brylee Wilson earned four medals (a gold, 2 silvers and a bronze), while Haily Irwin won three as the Southwest track team participated in its final regular season meet at Monett Thursday.

Wilson won the 800 in 2:47, finished second in the the 400 in 1:04.12 and was third in the high jump at 4-6. She also anchored the second place 4x400 relay team in 4:49. Irwin was also part of the 4x400 team and earned silver in the mile in 6:42 and bronze in the 400 in 1:11.01 

On the boys side, Scannell won the 110 high hurdles in 16.20, which was his best time of the season. He also took bronze in the long jump. Isaac Starr PRd in both the shot (37-2) and discus (98-6), Christian Long earned a fifth in the 800 and a 6th in the mile (PR of 5:10), Finally, the 4x400 relay team of Christian, Xander Deshields, Haiden Sanders and Max Terry earned a silver medal. 

Next up: SWCL meet @Spokane Wednesday afternoon and Districts @Sarcoxie next Saturday.

Southwest High School National Honor Society inducted 13 new members into its chapter and named officers for the 2019-2020 school year at a special ceremony last week. The new members are: front row: Khloe Holder, Bonnie Robbins, Karma Romine, Harleigh Jester, Allison Corwin, Mariah Munday, back row: Laney Moore, Brylee Wilson, Rylie Hill, Travis Sickles, Leland Colf, Austin Pippin and Andrew Bollinger. 

The new officers are: Carley Black (Historian and Reporter), Mollie Wheeler (Vice President), Karlea Holder (Secretary and Treasurer) and Rachel Jimenez (President). 

Track Team Earns 12 PRs at Cassville Meet

The high school track team recorded 12 personal bests (PRs) and earned medals in six events Tuesday, April 16, at the Cassville Relays. 

Some highlights: 
Sophomore Brylee Wilson was 3rd in the 800 (2:37.80 pr), 5th in the mile (6:24 pr) and anchored the 4x400 relay team that finished 3rd in 4:43.39 (pr). Seniors Mariah Munday and Laisha Sanchez and Freshman Haily Erwin rounded out the relay. 

On the boys side, Senior Trevor Sneed was 2nd in the 400 (53.89pr) and 3rd in the 200 (24.27pr), while Sophomore John Scannell was 2nd in the 110 hurdles in 16.69 (pr) and Sophomore Travis Sickles was 3rd int he 800 in 2:09.65 (pr). 

But maybe the race of the day was the boys 4x800 relay of Travis, Trevor and Freshmen Xander Deshields and Christian Long. Trevor opened with 2:11, Christian followed with a 2:17 and Xander a 2:16 and finally Travis anchored with a 2:10 for a total of 8:54.85, which shattered their mark for the year by 18 seconds.

Two Win Three Medals Each At East Newton Track Meet

Sophomore Brylee Wilson and Senior Trevor Sneed each won three medals Thursday at the track meet at cold and windy East Newton High School.

Brylee won the 800 meters for the third straight meet in 2:42.81 and earned bronze with a PR of 6:30 in the mile. She also anchored the 4x400 relay with Senior Laisha Sanchez, Senior Mariah Munday and Freshman Haily Erwin that also won bronze. The only other girls to score were Mariah with a sixth in the triple jump and Haily with a sixth in the mile.

Trevor placed second in the 400 in 56.1 and third in the 200 in 24.5 and helped the 4x800 relay earn bronze in 9:20.38. Other highlights: Sophomore Travis Sickles placed third in the mile in 5:01 and 5th in the 800 in 2:18, Senior Isaac Starr has his top performance of the season in both the shot (36-1 for 5th)  and discus (94-6 for 6th).

Pierce City Track Results

The high school track team competed with 17 other schools at Pierce City Tuesday. Sophomore Brylee Wilson led the girls team by winning the 800 meters in 2:38.37 and finishing 4th in the mile in 6:34. Other highlights on the girls side: Senior Mariah Munday was 4th in the triple jump in 28 feet, while Senior Laisha Sanchez has a PR of 30 seconds in the 200 meters and Freshman Eden Morris has PR of 13-5 in the long jump. On the boys side, Sophomore John Scannell earned silver in the long jump and bronze in the triple jump and the 100 hurdles. Also, the 4x800 relay was second in 9:16, while the 4x400 relay was 4th in 3:55.4. Finally, Senior Trevor Sneed was 3rd in the 400 in 55.31, while Sophomore Travis Sickles was 3rd in the 800 and 5th in the mile and Freshman Max Terry was 4th in the 200 in a PR of 24.26 (Max also PR'd in the long jump in 17-10). Trevor and Freshmen Christian Long and Xander Deshields were on both of the relay teams that placed.

Track Faced Tough Competition at Pea Ridge

The track team ran into some tough competition at Pea Ridge Thursday, but the Trojans and Lady Trojans fared well. The boys were 10th of 14 teams, while the girls were 12th of 17 teams. Some highlights: John Scannell 4th in hurdles, Trevor Sneed 6th in 400, Travis Sickles 6th in the mile, and 8th in the 800, Christian Long 10th in mile (and he won his heat going away), Brylee Wilson 8th in 800, Isaac Starr 14th in discus and shot. Mariah Munday 12th in long and triple jump. Next up: Pierce City Tuesday and East Newton next Thursday. "WE ARE SOUTHWEST."

Also, team scores tabulated Tuesday from College of the Ozarks. Boys finished 3rd overall with 65 points, beating Galena, Greenwood, Clever, Wheaton and College Heights. The girls were 5th overall.
