Southwest IS in school on Monday, January 13, 2025. The bus drivers will be instructed to drive very cautiously when picking up students. If there are parts of a bus route that are too hazardous to travel causing students not to be picked up, the student will not be penalized with an absence. Dr. Tilford

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE INFORMATION: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a hot topic in the technology world over the past couple of years. To help parents (and teachers and others) to understand this new technology, I'm providing a couple links that came through my email. Here are the two links: Parents' Ultimate Guide to Generative AI (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/articles/parents-ultimate-guide-to-generative-ai) and A Report Showing How Students Are Embracing AI (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/press-releases/new-report-shows-students-are-embracing-artificial-intelligence-despite-lack-of-parent-awareness-and). Southwest School District is aware of concerns with AI especially regarding academic dishonesty and student data privacy. We attempt to block access to tools that are unsafe for students to use while they are using their district issued Chromebook. If you ever have any questions regarding online student safety, please reach out to our Technology Director, Dan Shelton, by email at: dshelton @ swr5.net (be sure to remove the spaces).

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Staff, I want to inform you about a recent incident involving a threat that was made on social media. This threat was detected by the FBI, who promptly contacted the Missouri Information Analysis Center (MIAC) which is part of the Missouri Highway Patrol. MIAC reached out to me directly through both text message and verbal phone call at 9:34 pm on Thursday evening. In addition to contacting the district, MIAC contacted the Barry County Sheriff's Department who dispatched Deputies to investigate the situation. By 10:23 pm, I had spoken to the Barry County Deputies who had made personal contact with the individual and deemed the threat to be unsubstantiated. Due to confidentiality, I cannot provide any other details regarding this specific situation. There were three things I gleamed from this situation. First and most importantly, since the safety of our students and staff is the district's top priority, I was tremendously impressed to find out that even the most minor threats, made over social media, are being reviewed by the FBI and reported by the MIAC. Secondly, I was particularly pleased that the MIAC was persistent in contacting the school district and local sheriff's department so that the investigative process could be started. Finally, I was extremely satisfied with the quick response time of the Barry Sheriff's Department to make contact, investigate, and report their findings to me. Once again, I am pleased to report that the threat has been deemed unsubstantiated. As always, the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and the district appreciates each agency’s attention to this matter. Thank you. Dr. Tilford
