After reviewing the camera footage, the pellet rifle slid off the back of a newer flat bed ram truck with a cattle guard and cab/bed lights that was speeding through the high school parking lot at 12:15 am on Sunday morning. It looks as though it was not intentional and no harm was meant toward any students or staff. If anyone can identify who was driving this vehicle, please contact Ms. Tilford at 417-826-5410.

At 7:41 am, the Central Office was notified that there was a potential weapon found in the grass on campus. Two teachers were already at the location, had the potential weapon is their possession, and had contacted law enforcement. The district was placed on lock down at 7:47 am by each building administrator. By 7:58 am, the communication system sent a formal lock down district wide. At 8:03 am, once law enforcement assessed the weapon, it was determined to be a pellet gun that looks like an assault weapon. Cameras are being evaluated to see if it was thrown from a vehicle or if it possibly accidentally slid from a vehicle. No students or staff were in any danger at any point. The district wants to thank the student who reported the weapon, the teachers who quickly responded, and Deputy Henry for assessing the situation. Everyone is safe and the district was released from lock down by 8:10 am.

The Trunk or Treat will be held in the Middle School Gym. I'm not going to wait until 12:30pm to make the decision as the wind at the school is crazy strong and cold. Pre-k will start at 1:00 pm. Parents are still able to come and walk with their child in the Middle School Gym. If you are taking your child home from Trunk or Treat remember you must sign him/her out in the office and get a check-out slip of paper to hand to the teacher. ALSO, if your child brought in a pumpkin, please make sure you take it home. Any left will be thrown away.

Regarding Trunk or Treat: If it is still raining at 12:30pm and the radar predicts it will continue raining at 1:00pm and on, we will move the Trunk or Treat into the Middle School Gym. We'll be able to spread out and still allow candy to be handed out. Mr. Payne will make the call at 12:30pm so those handing out candy will have time to get situated in the gym.

The field trip for tomorrow is canceled. 🙁 Nearly all weather forecasts I've looked at and watched are predicting rain at least through noon and the temperature continually dropping throughout the day. I, also, just recently spoke with a woman at the Exeter Corn Maze, and she said the kids would get extremely muddy due to the saturated ground, even if it does not rain tomorrow. She even said that she would not bring the kids if she were I. Mother Nature has really frustrated us recently, but we're going to make the best of tomorrow and have some fun! If your child(ren) would like to wear pajamas tomorrow, that will be just fine. 🙂

Southwest Middle School Important Dates to Remember Parent teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 21. Your student's homeroom teacher will be contacting you via email or phone to discuss your child’s progress. There will be no meetings in the building this year. Students have been working on a digital portfolio to share with parents. Please ask them about their portfolios. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact myself and I can provide you with teacher contact information. Southwest Middle School picture retakes will be held on Wednesday, October 27. If your child needs a retake or was not here for the first picture day, we will get those done on October 27.

Southwest Defeats Purdy in Volleyball: The JV and Varsity volleyball teams both defeated Purdy Thursday night on Pink Out. The school also raised more than $1,100 for a local woman suffering from breast cancer. It was quite a night with the Southwest Tumblers performing, a huge bake sale (and there's still more food, if you need/want baked good, we have leftovers!), serving contest, face painting. I am constantly blown away by how our community comes together to support our young people. Thank you to everyone who participated. Some JV stats (25-13, 19-25, 15-7) - The girls earned their second conference win. Montana Skelton had 5 kills, while Juliauna Sierra added 4. Laura Jean Henry had 8 assists. Riley Flipper was 11 for 11 serving with 3 aces and 7 digs. Signe Suchowski was 12 of 12 serving with 4 aces and 3 kills. Raeli Miles was 13 of 14 serving with 6 aces and 10 of 11 in serve reception. Some Varsity Stats (26-24, 25-18, 25-15) - The girls earned their second win. Brooklynn Slye had 7 kills and 2 blocks, Olvia Ayer had 17 digs, 6 aces, and 4 kills, Amy Reeves was 13 of 14 serving with 15 receptions and 17 digs. Shelbie Pendergraft was 9 of 9 serving with 6 assists and 5 digs. The girls are busy this week with Senior Night Monday against Hurley, at Gentry Tuesday, at Galena Saturday and at the Pierce City JV Tournament next Saturday.

Southwest R5 Schools: Around 6:00 pm, the Missouri State Highway Patrol allowed the students transfer to the second bus. At 6:33, the bus called and stated that all the students were home. Once again, the district appreciates the patience shown during this unfortunate event. As previously stated, no one including the driver of the other vehicle sustained injuries from the accident.

At approximately 4:00pm, bus # 9 was involved in an accident. At this point, we have no details other than no one was injured. A second bus was dispatched to the location and will take students home. Due to insurance protocol, students can't be released to parents/guardians at the location of the accident. Please be patient with the district and know the safety of the students and bus driver is most important.

Baseball Update: The baseball team traveled to Billings last night and came away with a 6 to 4 Varsity conference victory. Brendyn Paulsen got the win on the mound with Zak Corwin going 2 for 4 and Evan Ennis going 2 for 3 at the plate. Coy Shrum had 2 rbi's with Tristan Morgan, Brendyn Paulsen, Evan Ennis, and Trey Ray each had 1 rbi. The JV game ended in a 5 to 5 tie as it was very late so we didn't go extra innings. The Varsity plays again tonight in the Purdy Tournament at 4:30 vs Hurley and 6:30 vs Exeter. They finish the tournament Saturday morning at 11 am vs Purdy.
